“Running is Crucial for your Dog’s Health”

The Petrnr provides your dog:

  • Increased physical health: Dogs need exercise to stay in shape. Petrnr chasing results in tip-top body condition, from a healthy weight and muscle tone to a healthy metabolism. Running also helps strengthen your dog’s heart muscles and improves lung health. It also uses different muscles than just walking, and it provides a more intense work out.
  • Joint and Muscle Strength: Exercise is particularly important for maintaining joint and muscle health in dogs, especially as they age. Petrnr chasing helps lubricate joints, improve flexibility, and strengthen muscles, reducing the risk of arthritis and other degenerative conditions.
  • Improved dental health: The treats in the Petrnr lure are canine denta-sticks, which remove plaque and help keep teeth clean.
  • Weight Management:  By chasing the Petrnr, your dog can burn off excess calories, which helps prevent weight gain and associated health issues such as joint problems, heart disease, and diabetes. A well-exercised dog is a happy and healthy dog!
  • Increased mental stimulation: Dogs need as much physical exercise as they do mental exercise. Physical activity plays a big part in dogs’ mental states and provides stimulation for both the body and brain.
  • Increased Lifespan: A healthy and active lifestyle has a direct impact on a dog’s lifespan. Regular exercise, coupled with a nutritious diet, enrichment and regular veterinary care can significantly increase your canine companion’s life expectancy. Dogs that engage in regular physical activity tend to have stronger immune systems, lower risks of chronic diseases, and improved overall health.
  • Owner timesaving: The American Kennel Club recommends at least 30 minutes to 2 hours of exercise per day for most dogs, depending on their energy levels and requirements. Many owners lack the time to provide this level of activity. In less than 20 minutes, the Petrnr can provide a days worth of beneficial exercise for your dog.

The Petrnr package includes a wheel mounted chase animal, a remote control, a “tail” with a presssure-sensitive lure release, and two lures with treat holders.

Operation and Purchasing

The Petrnr is an adults only application to be run under close supervision of the animal and with awareness of the environment.

The Petrnr is controlled by a hand held transmitter that controls the Petrnr’s steering and speed. A new user can learn to operate it in about 10 minutes.

The Petrnr should be controlled by the dog owner familiar with the pet’s habits and endurance. Care must be taken not to exhaust the dog or run it excessively or in hot weather or icy conditions.

The adult operator must be familiar with and must comply with all instructions that came with the Petrnr.

The operator must insure that dog is chasing the Petrnr from the rear, and that the Petrnr does not hit the pet or any persons or objects in the vicinity. Also, the dog should only contact the detachable lure, not the Petrnr itself.

To reduce the risk of injury, the Petrunr should follow an elongated oval path with wide turns. Avoid sharp turns and zig zags that cause the dog to make tight directional changes while running. That could injure the dog’s legs. Straight line runs are preferred, and moderate the speed so the dog is not overtaxed.

The dog cannot be permitted to chew or overturn the Petrnr itself, as the dog could be harmed if allowed to chew on the Petrnr’s plastic cover or battery power supply.

Before running your dog with the Petrnr, you must review and agree to comply with the American Veterinary Medical Association guidance called “Run Spot Run” at: https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/run-spot-run

This article identifies certain breeds that should not be run, explains conditions for running, including preferred surfaces and environments, and signs of trouble.

Many dogs chase the Petrnr, but some may require short training. If your dog chases objects (balls/frisbees), small animals, plays fetch, and/or hunts it should chase the Petrnr. Dogs with low “prey drive” may not engage with it, or might run from it.

The Petrnr works best in a dry grass park or open space that allows the dog to run for at least 40-60 yards and that provides the Petrnr with area to build up speed and maneuver. Asphalt, concrete, tennis courts, or other hard surfaces are prohibited for dog safety reasons. Only dogs that are trained not to flee or that will stay with its owner in an open space should be run in a non-fenced area.

The Petrnr cannot be used on any wet surfaces.

You can run the Petrnr in a public dog park but the space should be wide open and fairly free of obstacles or hard surfaces that the toy could impact and break. Also, when run at a public dog park, other dogs in the park are likely to join the chase, and if the lure is used, they could make off with the lure.

If I don’t have access to a suitable fenced space and want to avoid a dog park, are there other options?

Yes. There is a web based service called Sniffspot (www.sniffspot.com) that will rent a fenced-in home yard space on an hourly basis in your area. If your dog is trained not to run away in open areas, hundreds of non-fenced parks are available.

Safety is the first priority.

The Petrnr must be operated carefully in accordance with the instructions. If the Petrnr is run in a careless manner or in an improper area, or if the dog is run too hard, or in poor conditions, the dog could be injured.

The operator must protect the dog by closely watching its running and its tiredness level. If the dog shows any sign of injury, use must be discontinued immediately. Per the Petrnr Terms and Conditions found here, the Petrnr is not responsible for injuries to your animal.

Provided the instructions are followed, there should be nominal risk to the dog by use of the Petrnr. But leg injuries can occur to the dogs legs by running, so that risk exists and is assumed by the owner. If the dog is unleashed and encounters another animal that presents itself similar to the Petrnr, it is possible the dog will chase after the other animal.

Finally, it is recommended that dog owners have or acquire pet health insurance to mitigate the cost risk if the dog should require healthcare services.

This is possible but not preferred. The operator needs to closely monitor the chase to be sure the dogs do not fight one another or go after the Petrnr.

“This is like her having a second dog playmate – available at any time, and at a fraction of the cost. Wow!”

“Bower got more exercise in 5 minutes chasing the Petrnr than he has had in a month – can’t wait for the next run.”

“She has never had this type of sustained running – we both loved it.”

“My dog has gotten into scrapes at the dog park and this is a much safer way for him to get full-out exercise with no risk of harm from other dogs.”

“This pays for itself in two months compared to dog walking.”

Yes. Experienced Veterinarians have advised that provided the safety instructions are followed, “the Petrnr is a safe beneficial and fun system that can be enjoyed by dogs and their owners.”

There are 2 different Petrnr models: Barney and Foxy.

Barney

The Barney model with the Joystone platform is mid-performance and built on an 8 Inch long RC car. Barney can reach 25-30 MPH and can be run on low cropped dry grass, a gravel dog park or an AstroTurf field. Most dogs should not be able to run Barney down when run on a smooth surface at full throttle, but some fast ones can.

Foxy

The Foxy model with the Arrma platform is high performance, high energy, ruggedized and built on 11 Inch long scale RC car. Foxy can reach 50 MPH and can outrun almost all dogs. Foxy can be run in short cut fields or dry grass, gravel dog parks, AstroTurf and some more sloping terrain.

Relative to the Foxy model, the Barney model is lower cost, more compact, lighter and comes with 2 batteries and a built in power supply. It has a removable fur skin and fur tail. Barney can reach quick speeds but is not as fast, stable or as responsive to steering controls as Foxy. Barney has a shorter range of control and battery life compared to Foxy, and can best be viewed as a starter or training model leading to the Foxy model.

Importantly, if damaged due to impact at high speed with a hard or standing object, the Barney chase animal is generally not repairable and has to be replaced.

The Foxy model features a realistic small fox as the chase object, a longer release tail, and is much faster, more ruggedized and durable than the Barney model. Compared to Barney, Foxy is better engineered, more stable, more responsive to steering controls and has a longer range and time of operation per battery charge.

Within limits, if a part is damaged due to impact at high speed with a hard or standing object, the Foxy model can often be repaired by either the manufacturer or a local hobby shop.

The Foxy model is more expensive than the Barney model because of its advanced engineering and electronics, and increased power and speed. The Foxy bundle also includes a Li-ion battery, and a charger.

Both Barney and Foxy require regular cleaning and inspection after each use.
